Strange!
Moroccan star Ismail Saibari is set to lead the Atlas Lions against Canada in the last 16 of the World Cup on Saturday, with his European future on the rise following a move to Germany’s Bayern Munich.
French newspaper Le Parisien revealed that Paris Saint-Germain received an offer to sign the attacking midfielder in December last year, but the management of the Parisian club did not show serious interest in the deal and preferred to buy the Spaniard Drew Fernandez from Barcelona 3 weeks later, as he agreed with the vision of technical director Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos.
In the middle of this week, Bayern Munich announced the signing of Saibari, 25, from PSV Eindhoven on a five-year, €55 million deal, the biggest ever for a player born in the Spanish city of Terrassa.
Saibari presents an exceptional tournament in the World Championship. He scored 3 goals in 4 games to form the backbone of his country’s national team, who reached the last 16 after a thrilling penalty shootout win over the Netherlands last Monday night.
The match between Morocco and Canada begins on Saturday night, with the Atlas Lions considered the most likely candidates to advance to the quarter-finals in a possible showdown with France reminiscent of the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.
