The International Football Federation (FIFA) has surprised its Iraqi counterpart after rejecting a request for parity with its Saudi counterpart ahead of the 2026 World Cup finals in the Americas, Canada and Mexico.

The Iraqi national team begins its matches in the finals of the 2026 World Cup in the early hours of Wednesday when it meets its Norwegian counterpart at the Gillette Stadium in the American city of Boston in the first round of the ninth group competition.

Hours before the match, the Iraqi Football Association submitted a request to FIFA to raise its flag from the ground during the players’ rendition of the national anthem before the kick-off whistle, it has been revealed. Iraqi journalist Omar Qahtan.

The Iraqi Federation’s request is due to the presence of the word “Allah Akbar” on the flag. The same thing that happened with the flag of Saudi Arabia, which was raised from the ground during the performance of the national anthem before the meeting with Uruguay.at dawn on Tuesday because of the presence of the monotheistic slogan: “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.”

An Iraqi journalist voiced his surprise as he said the International Football Federation (FIFA) had rejected his Iraqi counterpart’s request and confirmed it would not happen again at the upcoming World Cup.

FIFA reported that the floor of the Hard Rock stadium in the American city of Miami was damaged by flag bearers putting pressure on it while wet, and a decision was made not to repeat the matter in the future.

Notably, the current World Cup witnessed a new protocol during the playing of the national anthem, placing the flags of both countries on the field where the entire elements of each team lined up to perform.
