Supergirl: ‘We want your song in our movie – but can you sing in a foreign language?’

Winnie was well used to the spotlight – from playing in London bars to foreign music festivals – but singing in a foreign language brought a new world of challenges.

When Supergirl visits the planet Bilquis, the character performs her original song at a strange bar in space.

What We Are is Winnie’s first song released as a solo artist in 2020, and she hired a foreign language specialist to translate it into Bilkis.

“We went through every word and every syllable to make sure the pronunciation was perfect for Bilquis,” she said.

“It was really cool about the structure and origin of the language he created because he’s the guy who created other languages ​​like[Star Trek’s]Klingon.

“Being a guest of Bilkis was so much fun, I’ve always wanted to be a guest.”

During production, she would have to wake up at 4am to get to the set in Leeds in time to wear her Bilquis costume.

“The hair, the make-up, everything was applied by hand and it took about four hours – and at the end of the day they were washing me.”
