Supergirl is a box office disaster. How can Marvel and DC save the classic movie? | | Video

MeSometimes it’s hard to believe that modernity Superman Movies lasted nearly four decades before Man of Steel met Batman on the big screen. Since 2008, when Iron Man burst into life, we’ve become accustomed to the superhero movie as a giant, interconnected machine: hats, gods, aliens and magic stones, all moving around a single pinball table. There have been many of these comic book movies, often built around characters that are not well known to moviegoers: Rocket Raccoon, Ant-Man, Blue Beetle.

Until recently, the audience just came across as an all-you-can-eat meal. It was like there was always going to be some dusty, shiny cube helmet or giant talking tree waiting in the comic book loft to turn into a billion dollars. No one expected the well to dry up soon. Which makes us difficult Super girl‘s horror box office.

The new DC Studios film, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, it opened to just $38m in North America and an estimated $68m worldwide last weekdismal figures for a film that is said to take in around $170m, before advertising costs. This has been seen as a challenge for James Gunn’s new DCU, only two films.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe taught the audience to believe that small characters are important, because they go on to big things: a big group like the Avengers movies, or the next link in an exciting series of superheroes. But when a movie like Supergirl fails to take off, problems become apparent — and we can say the same about Marvel’s. ForeverSony live action Spider-Verse movies like Madam Webor DCs The Flash.

Superhero cinematic universes are built to grow, and each addition contributes to the larger concept of Lego fiction. When one of the pieces doesn’t fit together, it’s hard to motivate fans to bother with the next installment. Is Supergirl now coming in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow to prove to the whole world that she he does more careful than Krypto and drunk? It could be one way forward, if Gunn follows through Last year’s Superman it’s a smash hit.

It also makes it possible for DC, which has already destroyed one comic book, to focus on popular artists. Andy Muschietti, the director of the It films, has been selected to direct the film Batman: The Brave and the Bold which will exist within the main continuity (The version of Robert Pattinson he lives in his own version of Gotham, and will never meet Superman or Wonder Woman). There’s also going to be more pressure on projects like the upcoming horror film Clayface, though the latter doesn’t have the big budgets or requirements to feed a lot of material. Will the future of DC now be limited to Superman and Batman movies, which are sometimes cheap “Elseworlds”, where everyone sits tight and waits for someone to rebuild their confidence?

If so, this wasn’t the start Gunn and studio head Peter Safran would have wanted. Will we see movies like James Mangold’s Swamp Thing, or the proposed movies based on Teen Titans, and Bane and Deathstroke? Safran said nothing has changed post-Supergirl, but the studio Warner Bros. can see things differently if Supergirl is about to lose $100m.

And yet the main title, surprisingly, could be Marvel. Sony has already destroyed any chance of characters like Kraven the Hunter, Morbius or Madame Web entering Spider-Man’s MCU world. But if audiences just turn off when heroes other than the big names take their own names, how will that affect the blockbuster movies that have made the studios billions at the box office? Does anyone really care if Shang-Chi goes after Doctor Doom in Secret Wars if the last movie about the hero with the ring came out six years ago? There are also fewer movies in theaters than there were a few years agoand Former Disney CEO Bob Iger has indicated that the constant rotation of Disney + spin-offs will resume. In addition, the reduction of high-quality video often destroys all the malfunctioning machines.

No doubt the cynics will rejoice. But it will be sad if the thing that made such films so inspiring in the first place – being able to see Spider-Man exchange badinage with Iron Man and Thor in the middle of many big fights, could be the one that ruins the era of the superhero cinematic universe.
