Teenager Ewan Irwin shone as Warrington came from behind to go top of the Betfred Super League with a hard-fought 18-6 win at rivals St Helens.
The 18-year-old half-back capped a superb fightback with a decisive second-half try at the Brewdog Stadium as Wolves secured their ninth win over their neighbours.
The Saints paid the price for failing to build on their first-half dominance, managing just one converted try from Tristan Seaman.
With Irwin involved in the move, Warrington replied through Albert Hoppoet before the interval and Josh Smith put the visitors ahead after the restart.
Irwin, who converted three wire tries, settled the contest with 10 minutes to go.
Warrington were fortunate to play at half time with the score 6-6.
Jonny Lomax twice went close to opening the scoring for Saints but was knocked off the line at his mercy and then held a last-gasp tackle from Josh Thewlis.
The seamer put the hosts ahead with a piece of individual intelligence when he kicked and re-collected his own kick to touch down. He converted himself.
Warrington’s problems were compounded by the loss of youngster Jack Gardner, who made his first appearance of the season after recovering from injury, with a shoulder problem.
Things could have got worse for the visitors as Jack Welsby found Wayne Dagnall with a floated pass but, after avoiding a challenge, the winger was halted by another try-saving challenge from Thewlis.
Wolves weathered the storm and equalized on the stroke of half-time as Smith cleared from Irwin’s pass to send Hoppoet into the corner.
The visitors took the momentum in the second half and Ben Currie thought he had given his way but was ruled out by the video referee.
It was a controversial decision but Warrington got a lucky break after a George Whitby kick bounced kindly off Smith. The center quickly turned defense into attack, running 80 meters to score.
The Saints rallied but could not find a way through Warrington’s disciplined defence.
Their hopes ended after Welsby spilled a high ball in front of his own post, and Warrington made the most of the opportunity as Irwin found a gap to dart and score.
