It was a meeting of the competition’s top scorers – Leeds had scored 102 points in their previous two games – while Wakefield arrived at Headingley with an average defence, conceding fewer points than anyone else in the opening nine rounds.
That record was quickly threatened as Connor’s early penalty set the tone and after Trinity’s Cam Scott was taken off on a stretcher to hospital after a clash of heads, Sivo benefited from a surprisingly quick hand from Handley to score the first try.
The Rhinos were brimming with confidence and flair and Connor’s no-look pass cut Watkins through defensive cover to send it 14-0.
Oliver Pratt finally got Wakefield into the game for his 11th Super League of the season, but Leeds were unrelenting in the first half and Lachy Miller sent Civo over for the second try to restore a 14-point lead.
The momentum changed just before the break as Civo received his yellow card for a high tackle on Josh Rourke, and big Kiwi front rower Lolesio tried to bring new hope to the traveling fans by powering to the line for his first Wakefield.
Connor added a penalty early in the second half to give Leeds breathing space, but just before Civo returned to the field, Leeds lost another as Handley was adjudged to have tripped Rour as the two ran after the goal kick.
Again Trinity used the extra man as the 23-year-old winger finished superbly in Myers’ corner and Mason Lino’s conversion cut the lead to four.
Super League’s leading points scorer Connor kicked eight of nine in the end, a big contribution, but he showed another side to his game with an interception and set up Croft for a try at a big moment in the game.
Still Trinity pulled away and Myers added another after catching Rourke’s kick over the top, but Leeds were not to be denied as Civo produced another strong finish in the corner and Connor added a penalty.
Even Jack Bird’s sin-binning, Leeds’ third yellow of the night, failed to disrupt the flow of the game as Croft continued his pursuit of team-mate Sivo to top the scoring charts for his second of the night and 13th overall.
