Careful and caring, and full of love and energy, Beth Orton has one of the most iconic voices in all of British music, and as he prepares to release his new album The Ground Above, he’s answering your questions.
Born in Norfolk and raised in east London, Orton mingled with rave royalty – Andrew Weatherall, the Chemical Brothers, William Orbit – and his platinum-selling album Trailer Park was not far from club meetings in a matter of hours, thanks to its exciting combination of singing and subtle electronic touches: Orton was nominated Following Central Reservation leaned towards a sound full of jazz and soul, and his third album, Daybreaker, took him to the UK Top 10.
Although she didn’t achieve commercial success, her subsequent albums are excellent, from the Jim O’Rourke-produced Comfort of Strangers to the rock of Sugaring Season, the electronica on Kidsticks, and her stunning, tormented 2022 Weather Alive: an exploration of femininity, nature and enduring love.
Following Up Above will be released on 26 June – Waiting’s only single, a jazz song, is there in all its glory – and let him know that he will answer your questions about his life and work. Leave them in the comments below by May 12, and we’ll publish the answers in the May 15 edition of Films & Music’s print section, as well as online.
