Stellantis beats Mobileye by supporting hands-free driving

Stellantis will use technology from Intel’s Mobileye to develop its Level 2 hands-free driving equipment for its vehicles, the companies announced on Tuesday.

Starting in 2027, Stellantis will start using Mobileye’s EyeQ system-on-a-chip and A data crowdsourcing program called Road Experience Managementor REM, which uses real-time data from vehicles created by Mobileye to create a global 3D map. The technology will enable “hands-free, in-car tracking and smart way to keep track of unmarked roads in designated areas,” Mobileye said. Stellantis, which is the parent of Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, and others, did not immediately mention which models will get the Mobileye system.

Automakers are racing to add advanced driver assistance devices (ADAS) to their vehicles, which can sometimes improve safety but are often seen as a way to drive on the road. This technology is seen as a precursor to more driving, and it’s a potential cash cow, helping to fund subscriptions and programs. Estimates predict that ADAS revenue is expected to hit $90 billion over the next ten years.

Stellantis already offers a Hands-Free Active Driving Assist feature in some Jeep and Ram models, but the company hasn’t been as aggressive in pushing the technology as rivals like Ford and GM. Last year, it launched a new “hands-free, eyes-free” system. it is called STLA AutoDrive for drivers who want to reclaim “precious time” while in stop-and-go traffic. The system is being developed in collaboration with the UK self-driving company Wayve, which is expected to be launched in 2028.

Mobileye said the addition of Stellantis means that the Jerusalem-based company now supplies “five of the top ten manufacturers in the world that contribute to REM.” Mobileye says REM covers more than 95 percent of public roads in the United States and Europe, pulling data from more than 8 million vehicles that logged 34 billion miles last year. The company reported revenue of $558 million in the first quarter of 2026 – a 27% jump year over year.
