And yes, there are four references in the Office of Fiscal Responsibility. Economic and fiscal outlook from November, External It is not clear where the last year refers to the digital identity and how to pay the money.
For example, on page 10, it says, “The cost of digital ID cards, no specific funding has been received.”
On page 172 it says “no clear provision has been made for the £0.6bn annual cost of concerns around the implementation of digital ID cards”.
Apparently this was a criticism of the policy funding that Jones had previously advocated, so the charges were as relevant to him and Sir Keir Starmer’s government as Andy Burnham and his new ideas.
But it is Burnham who is now Prime Minister and, as he put it in his first Downing Street speech, “how we pay for it” is the policies he is pushing.
All this just days after Sir Keir Starmer’s successor announced the need to end “groupism” in the Labor Party.
At lunchtime, Burnham will gather the cabinet for the first time, after the appointment was the subject of yesterday’s evening.
At 10pm on Monday night, a minibus full of ministerial demands was waiting in Downing Street for their new location to be confirmed.
One of the posts later filled was defense secretary, a role held by Wes Streeting, whose resignation as health secretary two months earlier contributed to the depletion of Sir Keir’s tenure as prime minister.
One of the key stories of the reform was the well-meaning banter of ministers close and now loyal to former prime minister Darren Jones, but also David Lammy, Peter Kyle, Lord Hermer, Steve Reid and Rachel Reeves – although Reeves, I’m told, was offered a cabinet post but turned it down.
The question is, how much will we hear publicly from those evicted Starmerites in the coming days, weeks and months as Andy Burnham’s government puts up its tent.
I didn’t think it would start so soon.
