Paul Rowley has resigned as St Helens coach with immediate effect.

The Saints have endured a tough season by their high standards as they currently hold the final play-off position in sixth place on two points – ahead of Hull KR who have a game in hand – having never missed the Super League play-offs.

Assistant coach Eamonn O’Carroll will take interim leadership of the side ahead of their rival round match against Wigan Warriors on Friday, direct Sky Sports At 8 p.m

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus said, “I would like to thank Paul for his commitment and hard work as our head coach. He will always be warmly welcomed at the club.”

“The decision was an extremely difficult one for all concerned, and we fully recognize the additional challenges that Paul has faced with us during this particular season.

“As a club we must now look forward and do everything in our power to defend our position as the most successful club in Super League history and reclaim our position as silverware contenders going forward.”
