St Helens’ Jodie Cunningham and Emily Roose have set retirement dates

Sharing the same club honor as her lifelong friend, Chaney became only the second female player to reach 100 match appearances for the club after Croll. He scored 48 tries in 102 appearances.

“I think Jody and I always knew we would end up together,” she said.

“We’ve had long careers together and, to be honest, I don’t think either of us would want to play without the other.

“I probably think I can continue for a few more years, but I’m sure it’s the right decision. I’m excited for other opportunities and to experience some new things.”

Both players are hoping to make the England squad for the World Cup, which starts in October 2026 in Australia.

Cunningham began an off-field career in 2024 as head of women’s track and performance at St Helens.

St Helens chairman Eamon McManus compared them to suffrage leaders Christabel, Sylvia and Adela Pankhurst – daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst – for their influence on the women’s game.

“Jodie and Emily have been at the heart of the remarkable rise of women’s rugby league for St Helens and England in recent years,” he said.

“They have driven a pioneering spirit for the women’s game, and it is future generations who will truly bear the fruits of their incredible efforts. They truly are the Pankhurst Sisters of Women’s Rugby League.”
