Tottenham are two points clear of the relegation zone with two games to play after a 1-1 draw at Leeds.
Matthies went to nil from Tel Hero before being awarded a penalty for a dangerous overhead kick that caught Ethan Ampadu inside the area – a spot-kick call that was awarded after a VAR review.
The draw is a boost for West Ham, meaning live on if they beat Newcastle on Sunday Sky SportsThey will go above Spurs in the table.
Tottenham’s next match is at Chelsea on Tuesday 19 May, live on Sky Sports.
Sean Longstaff almost nicked it for Leeds 13 minutes into added time but was denied by a save of the season by Antonin Kinski, who somehow pushed the effort onto the crossbar.
There was still time for one last appeal for a potential foul by the returning James Maddison’s Lucas Nmecha which was overruled by referee Jared Gillett and VAR.
Meanwhile, Leeds, who certainly played with full concentration, will be playing Premier League football next season – the Whites’ top-flight status secured after West Ham’s 1-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday.
A season to forget for Spurs is drawing to a nervous conclusion.
Roberto Di Zerbi, who oversaw back-to-back wins with constant guidance on the touchline, sparked Spurs into life midway through the first half, Telle managing to squeeze between two defenders before his shot was deflected and Palhinha from close range moments later.
Spurs built on that intense period after the break and a moment of magic from Teal on 50 minutes brought the breakthrough.
Porro’s corner was cleared to Tell, who took a touch and produced a superb curl finish into the top corner for his fourth goal of the campaign.
It should have been 2-0 when Randall Kolo Muanyi got in behind and tapped Richarlison up, but he blazed over.
Leeds were then gifted a spot-kick by Tottenham scorer Teal.
After Spurs moved the early ball into the area, Tell’s acrobatic clearance attempt caught Ampadu in the face and, although referee Gillett started play, a penalty was awarded after a lengthy VAR check and pitchside monitor review.
Calvert-Lewin drilled down low to provide a lifeline for West Ham.
De Zerby turned to his bench and introduced Maddison with five minutes remaining, but in a frantic 13 minutes of stoppage time, Kinski brilliantly thwarted Longstaff before Maddison’s strong penalty appeal was waved away after combining with Nmecha to ensure Nmecha shared the lead.
Tottenham boss Roberto Di Zerbi speaks to Sky Sports:
“We played a good game, not great but there was a lot of pressure. We didn’t play calm.
“We wanted to win straight away. In the end, I think we have to fight until the end of the season. Leeds played well.
“We expect them to play like this against West Ham because it’s just like that.
“I’m sorry for the penalty we conceded because Matthies Tell scored a great goal. He’s very young and it’s not a problem for me. I’m happy for the attitude and mentality.
“We didn’t play well but that’s the relegation battle, you can’t play all the games calmly. We have to improve and change habits, the relegation battle is different than the Champions League battle.”
