Spotify is introducing AI-powered remixes

Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) have just announced a license that will allow users to promote production Updates and covers created by AI for the replacement music. The tool will be a paid add-on for Premium subscribers. Artists will be able to opt out of the program, but participants will collect money for this new AI.

In October last year, Spotify announced that it is working with UMG, as well as other major labels, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe, to create “reliable AI properties.” At the time, it was not clear what this meant. But this seems to be the first of the collaboration.

Spotify highlighted the principles that will guide the program: Choice of participation, fair return and new revenue, and Artist-fan connection. The introduction of fan-made covers and remixes that can be shared, but give back to the original artist, seems to achieve those goals.

In a wordsSpotify Co-CEO Alex Norström said, “What we’re building comes from licensing, credit, and payments to artists and songwriters who participate.” Sir Lucian Grainge, CEO of UMG, added, “The most valuable innovation in the music business has always been connecting artists and fans. This principle is at the heart of the pioneering AI-powered superfan initiative, which is designed to enhance human creativity, enhance fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters.”

Spotify did not say exactly when the new feature will be launched or how much it will cost more than a Premium subscription.
