After city officials confirmed that Queen of Pop Taylor Swift was unable to marry NFL star Travis Kelce over the July 4th Independence Day weekend, rumors continued to swirl about a man requesting permission to close a nearby road.
A spokeswoman for the mayor’s office, Dora Pecic, told the BBC that a permit was issued in early June to close roads around Madison Square Garden from July 2 to 4.
The New York Times first reported, External News of the release and several players on Kelsey’s Kansas City Chiefs team booked nearby hotel rooms.
After Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in August, fans have been on the hunt for clues as to where the two megastars will tie the knot.
Pecic has not disclosed who filed the license application, and CNN reports that neither Kelsey nor Swift’s name is on the application.
The New York Times reported several other developments regarding Swift and Kelce’s upcoming nuptials at Madison Square Garden, including that Amtrak police officers – who maintain security at Penn Station under the platform – were told to wait for Swift’s wedding over the busy holiday weekend.
The outlet reports that Swift will have an intimate set of 100 people at Madison Square Garden on July 2, followed by a big celebration on July 3 and possible performances at the event.
The choice of venue surprised many Swift fans, who thought the singer would marry in a more scenic outdoor location, such as an oceanfront home near her Rhode Island home. The couple’s engagement photos show Kelce proposing to Swift in a fairy-tale garden decorated with dozens of flowers.
Instead, the windowless 19,500-seat Madison Square Garden in midtown Manhattan lacks natural light and offers little in the way of scenic views.
Swifty Molly Gaffney of Albany, New York, said the choice of location “makes little sense at all.”
“It’s crazy that she’s getting married in Manhattan on the Fourth of July, let alone the USA 250 and the World Cup,” Gaffney said, referring to America’s 250th anniversary and the upcoming FIFA World Cup games.
The city is planning several events for the 4th of July weekend in celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday.
“This dark, industrial wedding venue couldn’t have been more confusing,” Gaffney said.
