Spanish Wildfire: A bonfire center in the village.

The BBC’s Nick Beck saw houses and a “sea of black” falling in the village of Badar in the southern Spanish province of Almeria.

The blaze spread rapidly across the region on Thursday, killing 12 people as hundreds of firefighters battled it.

The wildfire has burned 6,600 hectares (16,300 acres), local officials said.

Sustained heat waves of around 40C (104F) have caused wildfires in southern Europe this summer, particularly in France, Portugal and Spain.
