Spain’s Mapi Leon has left Barcelona to join London City Lionesses


“I have played in Spain for many years and I felt that now is the right time to transfer to this project. The English league is helping the growth of women’s football.

“I wanted to test myself in another country, another league and play another kind of football.”

The London City Lionesses, backed by American billionaire Michelle Kang, finished sixth in their first season in the WSL.

They have ambitions to challenge for European qualification this season and have had a significant transfer window so far.

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Putelas and former England goalkeeper Mary Earps have already joined Germany forward Nicole Aniomi and Denmark defender Jani Thomson.

“(Kang) is an inspiring woman who wants women’s football to grow and flourish. Of course, I want to be part of something, a club that is built for women,” added Leone.

“My teammates will help me settle into the new environment and I hope my experience and leadership can help the team this season.

“I want to win and still have the determination to be able to achieve it. Hopefully we can do it with the London City Lionesses.”
