Spain has struggled to contain the worst wildfires that have killed at least 12 people

Bedar officials said some of those who died did not take the recommended evacuation route – but it is unclear how well the directive was carried out.

Neither Spanish authorities nor the Foreign Ministry in London have released the identity of the deceased.

Sanz said the flash fire was complicated and that most or all of the victims may have been foreigners.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said many Belgians had second homes in the country and that consular services were trying to find “Belgians who could not be contacted”.

The Andalusian branch of the National Weather Agency said conditions on Saturday should be “rather more favorable”, with moderate winds and cool air.
