Days later A large IPOSpaceX says it’s spending $60 billion to buy Cursor — a bet that’s helping Elon Musk’s rocket/AI/social media behemoth win profitable businesses and close the gap with AI rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI.
The takeover was not unexpected: SpaceX announced a unusual arrangement in April when they agreed to acquire the software platform for $ 60 billion or pay $ 10 billion in cash. The company put off finalizing the deal while it went public.
In a SEC fileSpaceX said it expects the deal to close in the third quarter of 2026.
Musk has been there before he expressed his disappointment and xAI’s sub-par coding product, which lags behind popular tools like Anthropic Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. Acquiring Cursor, which offers a similar set of automation tools, can help close the gap. Startups have grown exponentially in recent years amid the need for more efficient tools and the shift to “What’s the vibe?” in the industry.
