Sounding surprise… an exhausted Sinner bid farewell to Roland Garros

Italy’s Yannick Siner, the world number one and one of the top contenders to win the Roland Garros title, sprung a major surprise after crashing out of the tournament in the second round, losing to Argentina’s Manuel Cherundolo in a marathon match that saw dramatic swings and spectacular physicality.

Sinner lost the encounter three sets to two in a match that looked headed for an easy decision in favor of the Italian star before things suddenly turned around as his fitness deteriorated in the third set.

As the match progressed, Siner was comfortably leading 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 and was one point away from deciding the match, before his agony began due to grueling physical conditions amid a sweltering heatwave that hit the French capital, Paris, with temperatures soaring to more than 30 degrees Celsius.

The player suffered a clearly stressful condition that saw him seek medical attention and suffer from severe dizziness before his ability to move was significantly reduced, allowing the Argentina international to gradually return to action.

As the first seed’s fitness deteriorated, Cirundolo took advantage of the situation and turned the tables in historic fashion to pull off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by ousting the world number one in the second round.

The final moments of the match saw a temporary halt after medical staff intervened amid obvious signs of concern for the condition of Sinner, who was suffering from severe fatigue and symptoms suggesting possible heat stroke or severe dehydration.

With the loss, Meghavor had an early exit from the tournament, which was a huge shock to his fans, especially after his excellent performances of late that made him the front-runner for the title, making his run in Paris one of the most brutal moments of his career so far.
