An institution that resolves bottlenecks, External (IFAS) was created in October 2022 with funding from the Home Office.
Their new impact report, published this week, highlights the perception and response to the chokehold in England four years after the law was introduced.
It includes data from police forces which shows a 13 per cent increase in reports from last year and 24,446 crimes by CPS since the start of the programme.
Dr Helen Bichard, Chief Clinical Psychologist at the North Wales Brain Injury Service, was involved in the first funding bid which led to the creation of IFAS.
In the year I did research in 2020, I think for the first time it showed the effect of strangulation on the brain, the government will use it to create the new law.
While changing the law is wonderful, more action is needed, she said.
“It was as if he followed all the systems needed to ensure that the legality was effective, so that’s why IFAS was created.”
One of these practices was the creation of guidelines for paramedics in the UK to stop strangulation.
“They are the first of their kind, they save lives – there is no more impact than that,” Bichard said, adding that important health professionals know the conditions and effects of choking.
“It can be traumatic, it can be fatal, that’s why strangulation is used in violence, it’s really effective.”
