Slots & Daggers Reviews: Sometimes, a short game hits the spot

This may sound like a complicated description, but the game mixes ideas from deckbuilding roguelikes and input mechanics to create an interesting loop, and there is a constant progression that helps you push forward with each run. Perhaps the best part is that Slots & Daggers it’s short: Developer Solo Friedemann describes the game as a mini roguelike, and I finished it, including all 12 achievements, in just six hours. this month, Slots & Daggers came out on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X / S, and it’s been a good reason to come back.

Slots & Daggers he has a game mentality within the game. From your window, you are looking down at a branch table full of things like drinks, cards, dice, knives, and cigarettes on an ashtray, and in the middle of the table is an electric machine, that’s the thing you agree with. At the beginning of the run, you choose three weapons to start your quest, such as a rusty sword or a poison blade or a shield.

At each turn, you’ll see three spinning wheels (or up to five with upgrades). You press a button to stop the wheels, and each wheel stops at a symbol from the tools you’ve picked up along the way and does something based on that symbol. So, for example, if the wheels stop on a sword, a poison blade, and then a shield, you will hit enemies, poison them, and then take your shields. Finding three of each symbol in a row creates a sensational explosion of lights and festive noises, just like hitting the jackpot in a virtual machine. You’ll also find items that allow you to control the wheels, which are an important (and satisfying) tool to find more opportunities to hit your enemies.

Over time, you’ll also find poker chips to use for upgrades, which are cleverly represented as little things you plug into the “machine” you’re playing with, like extra wheels, improved attack and defense, and refreshes.
