Sir Garfield Sobers: West Indies cricket legend dies aged 89


Former West Indies all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers, one of the greatest cricketers of all time, has passed away at the age of 89.

Sobers played 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets.

The entertaining left-arm batsman Sobers’ 365 against Pakistan in 1958 stood as a Test scoring record for 36 years.

He was also a brilliant all-rounder who bowled both spin and seam.

Sobers, who played county cricket for Nottinghamshire, was retired in 1975 for his services to cricket.

He was also named as one of the Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the 20th Century.

“A great innings is over. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers,” said Cricket West Indies.

Nottinghamshire described Sobers as “one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders and a great figure in Nottinghamshire history”.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers,” the club said.
