Sir Alex Ferguson praised his former rival Kevin Keegan

Ferguson joins a flood of accolades for former England captain and manager Keegan, whose illustrious playing career included spells at Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle.

During his six-year spell at Liverpool from 1971 to 1977, he won three League Cups, a European Cup, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup.

He helped Hamburg win the Bundesliga title and regained the Ballon d’Or in 1978 and 1979. Keegan is one of only four English players to have won the award.

In addition to England and Newcastle, he also worked as a coach at Fulham and Manchester City.

“He was my friend. Everyone loved him. For his passion. For his energy but most of all for his friendship. He loved football and he loved Newcastle more than anything else,” Shearer said.

“I am so honored to have known him. We will miss Kevin.”

“Kevin was an inspiration to me as a young player and I’m honored to call him a friend whose guidance and support have meant so much in recent years,” said Howe.

“He showed me incredible warmth and generosity. He gave a lot to this football club, but he was immediately welcomed.

“Kevin best understood the privilege and responsibility of leading Newcastle United. He was always willing to share his wisdom, encourage and offer support, and for that I will always be grateful.”

Former Scotland and Liverpool striker Sir Kenny Dallish Keegan explained: “He has worn Liverpool’s famous number seven shirt with great distinction and is one of the best players of his generation.”

He added that Dallish, who was signed from Celtic to replace Keegan at Liverpool in 1977, achieved nothing on the pitch but was a great man and a genuine man.

“It has given so many wonderful memories and the teams have played the game in a way that their fans love to see.

“Football has lost one of its true greats.”
