Singapore licks the straw of the French teenager with an Ijoz vending machine

A Singaporean court has fined a French student S$600 ($465; £348) for stealing a straw from an orange juice vending machine and putting it back into the dispenser.

Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilian, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of public disorder.

Maximilian, who is studying in Singapore, posted a video of himself licking straw on Instagram with the caption, “City is not safe.”

Many online reacted with disgust to the video, which was reposted on community sites and picked up by local news outlets.

According to iJooz, the owner of the vending machine, it replaced the 500 straws in the vending machine after Maximilian’s stunt.

Offenders of public disorder in Singapore face a fine of up to S$2,000, three months’ imprisonment or both.

Both the prosecution and the defense asked for a sentence for Maximilian.

Maximilian was “genuinely sorry for causing all this trouble and realized that what appeared to him at the time was probably something playful,” a defense lawyer was quoted as saying by The Straits Times.

Serving freshly squeezed orange juice for S$2 a cup, iJooz vending machines are a common sight in shopping districts, train stations and residential areas in Singapore.
