WI live in a post Die With a Smile world. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ 2024 megahit has nearly 4bn streams on Spotify alone: people crave AM radio music. Enter Sienna Spiro, a young singer whose famous voice is backed by a posh pedigree: her father, Glenn Spiro, is a well-known Hatton Garden jeweler; his mother, Arabella, is a well-known figure among people who are said to be mixed with royalty.
After jumping on TikTok, Spiro hit the UK music chart for the first time in 2024 and has had three US Hot 100 hits. Spiro is fascinated by stubborn words: the image he paints of himself is that of a handsome soldier, refusing to let his old self escape. Sometimes this works: Die on This Hill is soaring and brimming with conviction. On We Are Not in Love with High Hopes, it’s boring.
Spiro’s other features are torch music for all groups with symbols of greatness. This Is My House, produced by soul revivalist Leon Michels, is a completely different album than The Stranger, and it’s a very interesting one – save for the unlearned examples of civil rights legend Nikki Giovanni. But there’s also a lot of confusion in He’s Not My Baby, I’m His: written about a relationship with a man “twice my age”, the old song suffers because of the negative lyrics: “No one feels like they’re treated like a child when they’re chosen.” This excess is a common theme on The Guest – a little subtlety and Spiro’s brand of “new Adele” could stick.
