VAR adds to Iraq’s wounds… just sent off after an early Senegalese goal
In the first minutes of the match against the Senegal team in Toronto, the Iraq team had a series of clashes. At the end of the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Senegal took the lead in the fourth minuteAfter Abdullah Sek rose to cross from a corner kick, he curled a perfect header into the net as it hit teammate Habib Diarra.
Iraq’s misery was compounded in the tenth minute when Rabin Sulaka made a mistake with a header that collided with Sadio Mane and took the ball away from Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil, forcing Sulaka to block him to stop the danger.
The match referee initially called a foul and simply showed Sulaka a yellow card, then went back to review the ball using VAR techniques and decided to show the Iraqi defender a straight red card as he considered the ball to be a real scoring opportunity for the Lions of Teranga.

Notably, Senegal is in third place in Group 9 without points, losing to France (3-1) and Norway (3-2).
For their part, Iraq is also without points at the bottom of the standings, having lost to Norway (4-1) and France (3-0).
