The decisions of the goalkeepers of the coach of the German national team, Julian Nagelsmann, continue to cause confusion.
Ahead of tonight’s final pre-World Cup friendly against host nation United States of America, Nagelsmann has come under fire for his decision to bring back goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, 40.
Sports analyst Kathryn Lehmann told SPORT1 that the decision was unfair to the remaining goalkeepers, especially Oliver Baumann, who will have to return to the second-in-command seat after Neuer’s sudden return.
“I just don’t understand the decision and I’m angry at the way Oliver Baumann was treated. I can’t understand how in the current situation, with all this media coverage, how you can communicate in such an unprofessional way and continue to talk about values, sports legend Lehmann.
He added: “We want to be a team and then they treat somebody like that.”

Nagelsmann brought Neuer back to international duty for the 2026 World Cup, with Baumann expected to lose his position as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper in the future.
Lehmann believes that any discussion on this issue is unnecessary because “Baumann has maintained his consistently high level over the years” as a goalkeeper for the national team.
He emphasized that Neuer’s return could have been acceptable earlier and added: “But certainly not in this way.”
He pointed out that if Neuer makes a mistake, the responsibility will first fall on Nagelsmann and then on Neuer, and he continued: As for Baumann, he’s in a good position. He spoke collegially and said it was Germany’s problem. He was always honest and did not make any comments. “We’re talking about values, so I see Baumann as the only winner, no matter what.”
According to Bild, Neuer will miss the US friendly match. It remains unclear whether he will be ready to start his first World Cup match against Curacao.
“The whole of Germany will tremble at every shot of Neuer, because you don’t know if his leg will hold or not,” warned Lehmann. However, he believes in Neuer’s confidence. “If Manuel Neuer says: “I can,” she would endure. He knows it, but the whole nation doesn’t. It’s all about his feelings and his body.”
