The song that changed my life
There are many objectionable songs on The Mission soundtrack, but Gabriel’s Oboe (by Ennio Morricone) really touched me. I had to leave the street, I cried like a baby. I didn’t realize how powerful music could be until then. I was 22 years old.
The first single I bought
At Seventeen with Janis Ian. I refer to it in my album Little Miss Twain and it says a lot about how young people feel. I felt like him, I explained again – but I also thought: “Wow, I should write well one day.” It gave me purpose; I was very scared. I earned very little money, babysitting, taking care of my neighbor’s horse, singing in a bar. I would earn 20 bucks, which I usually give to my family, but I earned that reputation for myself.
The perfect song to play at a party
If Dancing Queen and Abba come on and you’re in the bathroom, you rush out, you can’t miss a minute.
A song I secretly love, but tell everyone I hate it
Nobody wants to listen to The Phantom of the Opera, but I just listen to the whole song. I have to do it myself – it’s a secret.
The song that wakes me up in the morning
When it comes to getting out of bed, pop always brings me somewhere, like Harry Styles’s Sign of the Times. It makes me happy.
A song that makes me cry
Michael Jackson’s Ben used to make me cry as a kid.
The song I make at karaoke
I was always the kid singing in bars, the last thing I wanted to do was get up and pretend. I was a real purist about it. But I realized that I was missing out on all the fun. I really like Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack.
The song I want to be played at my funeral
I have been through a lot of pain in my life and there are times when you have to bawl your eyes out. As a dead person, I want to say: this is a moment you cannot control, life goes to bad sometimes. So I would choose Don’t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin; some things you cannot change.
Shania Twain’s Little Miss Twain is out now.
