Cape Verde goalkeeper Josmiar Fusenia emerged as the hero of the surprise goalless draw against Spain at the start of the 2026 World Cup, putting in a historic performance that ranks as one of the best at the tournament in recent years.
Fossinha (age 40) became the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in his first World Cup game in the tournament’s history, according to Opta.
The experienced keeper performed exceptionally well as he saved 4 shots in the first half alone, the highest tally by any goalkeeper so far before the 2026 break, tied with Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada.
According to Squawka, Fosinha became the first goalkeeper to make more than six saves in the penalty area while keeping a clean sheet in a single World Cup game since 2018.

Fusenia finished the match against La Roja with 7 total saves, becoming only the fourth goalkeeper to record that many saves or more in the last three World Cup games, since:
Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico – 2018 vs. Germany) 9 saves.
Patrick Beach (Australia – 2026 vs. Türkiye) 8 saves.
Davis Ibasi (Cameroon – 2022 vs. Brazil) 7 saves.
According to the same network, Fosinha showed excellent performance in today’s game: 29-42 correct passes, and out of 27 shots, he recorded 7 saves (6 in the penalty area and one from outside), and also caught 3 passes.
A stunning performance from the Cape Verdean goalkeeper led to a historic point against one of the leading title contenders, reinforcing doubts about the effectiveness of Spain’s attack at this edition of the World Cup.
