Seven Britons among those killed in the Spanish wildfires

Authorities said seven of the victims were from the United Kingdom, three from Belgium, one from France and one from the United States. The last victim is a Spanish national.

“The 13 dead are eight women and five men, all of them adults,” added the public body responsible for identifying the victims.

Among the dead were Britons Pete and Fran Gillam, a couple from Bedar who lived in a village hit hard by the blaze. Their deaths have been confirmed by their families.

Their daughter Danielle Gillam-Kirton, from Sheffield, said in a Facebook post: “Mum and Dad are heartbroken to share that we have received confirmation from the police that they did not survive the fire.”

The fire, now under control, has burned 7,000 hectares (17,300 acres) of land, officials said.

Spain has suffered from frequent and severe heat waves in recent years, with temperatures often exceeding 40C.
