Serena Williams will partner Czech Karolina Muchova at next week’s Berlin Open as she continues her comeback.
The 44-year-old, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, returned to tennis at Queen’s earlier this week after nearly four years away from the game, partnering Victoria Mboko in the women’s doubles.
The pair got off to a winning start by beating third seeds Erin Routliff and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in straight sets, but Their withdrawal from the quarter-finals After Mboko suffered a nasty fall in his singles tie.
Muchova, 29, is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist in women’s singles and is ranked 10th in the WTA rankings.
“I’m pretty excited about it,” Muchova said at a news conference in Berlin on Saturday. “It’s not every day that such an amazing athlete, not only in tennis, but in sports, asks you to play tennis with him. I hope it’s fun.”
Mboko, who retired from her match against Karolina Pliskova, has been ruled out of the rest of the grass-court season, including Wimbledon, with a medial collateral ligament injury in her left knee.
“Unfortunately, I injured my MCL in my left knee in a fall on Wednesday,” Mboko said. “I was looking forward to playing (Wimbledon) this year.”
On partnering Williams, he added: “I learned a lot from you and I’m sorry our tournament ended prematurely, but I hope we can play together again soon and finish what we started.”
