Serena Williams back: How will she fare at Wimbledon when she returns to singles?

Williams has not won since the 2017 Australian Open at the age of 35. She has since given birth to two daughters – Olympia, now eight, and Adira, two.

In the year Since her debut in 2018, Williams has made four Grand Slam finals – twice at Wimbledon and twice at the US Open – but lost all of them.

The last two Wimbledon matches – in 2021 and 2022 – ended in first-round defeats.

What Williams has going for her is one of the greatest technical talents of all time – and an unparalleled aura.

Margaret Court’s all-time women’s record 24th major win seems out of reach, but Williams has looked at the open nature of the WTA Tour and feels there are still plenty of players she can beat.

The power and accuracy of her serve has been particularly effective on the grass and she will hope that her opening shot will earn her many free points.

Her chances of winning matches are certainly good at Wimbledon, especially if she faces a relatively inexperienced opponent who could be surprised by what could be an electric occasion on Center Court.

World number nine Victoria Mboko has played Williams twice at Queen’s and was confident the veteran was “ready to go”.

“She has such a pure ball. She can take years off and once she’s on the court she can find her rhythm and timing,” said the 19-year-old Canadian.

“I think that’s a gift from God that she has. I’m hitting her and she’s hitting hard.”

In her prime, Williams was the epitome of fitness and athleticism.

She said she used weight-loss drugs last year to overcome what she calls the “stigma” of using such drugs.

Williams said she struggled to lose the weight she gained during pregnancy — a common experience for many women — and returned to tennis.

“We all saw it. She looked amazing and better when she left the sport,” Davenport said.

“But we have to be a little nicer when we give her until she reaches her climax.”

Williams may not be getting anywhere near her best and she doesn’t know how long this comeback will last.

One thing, however, is that the woman who is considered a goat by many, is coming down swinging to regain her former glory.
