I’m here to help, not criticize… The Special One’s first statements since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho appeared in his first big interview since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu and he looked different in style, more poised and less emotional, but his essence remains the same:
Real Madrid announced the appointment of Mourinho as the coach of the team on June 11, 2026, for three seasons. The Portuguese coach will join the Merengues on July 13, which coincides with the start of the pre-season.
Mourinho, who was introduced to the world in 2004 with the nickname “The Special One”, now seems ready to bow out without relinquishing his authority. In his interview with Vanity Fair magazine, he said: “I don’t want to say that I was the chosen one, I was one of them.”
It seems that the passage of time has refined his public image without affecting the essence of his personality. The coach who dominated England with press conferences, who turned every big match into a psychological battle, who challenged the mighty Barcelona from the benches of Inter Milan and later Real Madrid, returns to the place where his status reached the peak of glory.
According to the newspaper, Mourinho said.Brand:Real Madrid’s history cannot be compared to any other history. A white jersey has a special charm. When we talk about Real Madrid, we talk about history and the legacy of football.”
In this new phase, Kylian Mbappe will be one of the biggest challenges he faces. The Frenchman is used to media hype despite his outstanding goalscoring record, and Mourinho is not dealing with this conflict. On the contrary, he calls for calmness, observation and dialogue.
Mourinho added: “This is not the time to talk, but the time to listen.”
The Portuguese coach insists that he needs to understand what he has seen so far only from the outside and explained. “I am here to help, not to criticize.”
“Mbappe is an exceptional player and I will try to help him become better.”
Mourinho recalled the past, especially the Clasico matches that divided football into two parts. Guardiola is on one side and he is on the other side. Messi and Cristiano on the field. “Real Madrid” and “Barcelona” are becoming a global phenomenon. “The world stopped to watch those matches… It wasn’t just limited to Real Madrid and Barcelona, or just Spain, it was the whole world, like the great tennis matches of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic.”
The Portuguese coach does not deny his past in Barcelona, saying: “I don’t hold any grudge against “Barcelona” and then made another classic statement. “I enjoy playing against the best because the best make you better.”
Mourinho said in his statements. “There’s a ridiculous theory that you can be great without winning… In sports, the goal is to win.”
To defend himself, Mourinho recalled his Real Madrid team in the 2011-2012 season, when they scored 100 points and scored 121 goals, and asked: “How well did that team defend?”
Mourinho also defended the Champions League semi-final between “Inter” and “Barcelona” in 2010.
He refused to reduce the issue to just heroic defending with ten men at Camp Nou and recalled his side’s 3-1 win a week ago. However, he proudly hails that heroic defense against the best team in the world and believes it was not about defending football, but the epitome of determination, professionalism and a highly competitive spirit.
Mourinho realizes he has helped make the coach a central figure. Before his arrival, the spotlight was often on the players, and with him the bench began to make headlines as well. But now he explains. “I never wanted to be more important than my players.”
Mourinho claims that charisma does not come from pretending. “You can’t buy charisma in a supermarket,” he says. For him, power is acquired through hard work: training, managing, preparing for matches, convincing the players.
Even the suit, one of his trademarks from his days at Chelsea, appears in the interview as a symbol of principles, and Mourinho sees it as part of football’s ritual. “The coach represents the club, the fans and the professional class,” he said. “That’s why I’ve never felt comfortable in any other uniform. The suit wasn’t just a mask, it was a protective shield.”
