About 600,000 mosquitoes will be released in the Washington, D.C. area this summer to reduce mosquito populations in the area. Only mosquitoes – with naturally occurring bacteria Wolbachia – released. They do not bite humans and the bacteria they carry prevents any eggs that are produced after mating from hatching.
Bee Safe Mosquito Control is the first business in the US to offer this type of pest control directly to residents. Historically, only local government mosquito control districts, public health agencies, or research partnerships have done this.
But the method is now gaining popularity, with Google’s parent company, Alphabet, seeking approval to release up to 64 million Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes in California and Florida. The effort comes as climate change creates more favorable conditions for mosquitoes to survive and breed, increasing the threat of mosquito-borne diseases.
