Second-tier Torrance stunned Sporting in the Portuguese Cup final

Second division side Torrens stunned Sporting with a penalty goal in extra time to win the Portuguese Cup.

Kevin Johi put Torrance ahead after three minutes but Luis Suarez equalized for 18-time winners Sporting early in the second half.

Sporting’s Uruguayan left-back Maximiliano Araujo was sent off in extra time after missing a penalty and Cape Verde defender Stopira scored the winner.

The first major trophy in their 109-year history allowed Torrance to enter the Europa League for the following season.

Torreense hail from Torres Vedras, a town 25 miles north of Lisbon and play in a stadium that holds around 2,500 spectators.

They had reached the Portuguese Cup final once before, when they lost to Porto in 1956.

They have a chance of promotion to the top flight, with Thursday’s play-off second leg against Casa Pia tied 0-0 after the first leg.

Sporting finished second in the league this season after winning the league and cup double last year.
