Seaton Carew as Wayne Taylor, the father of the sea death in the area

A father who died after helping two children in trouble swimming on a Teesside beach has been named locally as Wayne Taylor.

It is understood he and another man were brought ashore by the RNLI at Seton Carew beach in Hartlepool at 15:45 BST on Sunday, but both were pronounced dead a short time later.

The youths were taken to hospital as a precaution and were confirmed safe.

Cleveland Police said formal identification is still underway and inquiries are continuing to be made on behalf of the coroner.

Labor Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash described the men’s deaths as a “heartbreaking tragedy” for the town.

On Monday, Hartlepool Borough Council leader Graham Harrison, of Reform UK, called for a “full review of the current water safety arrangements at Seton Carew” and for the local beach.

The beach is only covered by lifeguards during the summer school holidays, which have not yet started.

Independent councilor Sue Little of Seaton Carey has called for lifeguards to stand down from May until the end of September, and a petition calling for the provision to be extended beyond the school holidays has received more than 1,600 signatures.
