Scottish teams in Europe have decided to postpone Premiership matches

All five Scottish teams in the European competition have decided to postpone their Premiership matches scheduled for Saturday, August 22.

The qualifying play-offs for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League will take place over the affected two legs over the weekend.

Both Celtic and Rangers are guaranteed to reach that stage in Europe, although the latter do not yet know which competition they will enter.

Previously, postponements had to be agreed by both clubs, but from April 2025, a team playing in Europe has been able to unilaterally delay a game.

Premiership winners Celtic do not yet know their opposition for this year’s Champions League play-offs, at which stage they were beaten by Kazakh side Kairat Almaty last season.

Hearts trail 4-0 on aggregate They could go into the second round of the Champions League qualifiers against Storm Graz and the third round of the Europa League qualifiers, where Rangers have already drawn against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok.

The only way Hearts can avoid the play-offs is if they beat Storm Graz on aggregate and then lose in the third round of the Champions League qualifiers. In that case, they will directly enter the league stage of the Europa League.

Motherwell and Hibernian are in the middle of their Conference League second-round qualifying tie and their league matches will be suspended if they reach the play-offs.

Motherwell are 2-0 up against the Faroese sidewhen Hibs lost the first leg by the same scoreline Kosovar team against Malysheva.

The rearranged games will be played midweek – either 8/9 or 15/16 September
