Scotland ‘Living Dream’ thanks to ‘humble’ superstar Caroline Weir

Wherever he plays his club football next season, Weir will now have his eye on October and those dangerous World Cup play-offs.

Third-best League B winners behind Switzerland and Portugal and ahead of Wales on goal difference, Scotland are 19th in the June 24 play-off draw.

That means they avoid Poland, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine, who finished bottom of their League A group, and will instead face one of the League B runners-up or third-placed teams – meaning Albania, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Northern Ireland, Slovakia or Türkiye.

Win that two-legged play-off in October and they still have one more way to go to reach the final in Brazil – possibly against the League A runners-up or one of the third-placed teams.

England and Republic of Ireland Among the teams who will be favorites to progress against the Group C winners.

It’s a long way away and, although Weir “wants to play them now”, he hopes it means Cuthbert has enough time to get back on track.

“It’s a huge loss for us,” he said. “He’s an integral player in the squad, not only on the field but off the pitch as well. He’s such a talent and such a leader.

“So we missed him tonight. We’ll hope his rehab goes well and he’ll be back, hopefully, come the playoffs.”

Weir, though, was “really proud of the team” in Cuthbert’s absence.

“Not just the way we are scoring goals, but the ruthlessness, mentality, professionalism of the whole squad”.

As his head coach noted, after an exciting finish, they fully deserved to be able to “draw a breath” while adding: “You have to have a vision and you have to have a dream and we’re living it.”
