Scientists have been released at a diabetes conference to share reprints of journal articles

Five leading scientists he was expelled starting from the year meeting cha American Diabetes Association (ADA) in New Orleans on Friday. Their case: providing editor’s copies, printed in Diabetes Care magazine on April 29, strongly criticizes the Trump administration’s attacks on scientific research.

Those fired were Steven Kahn, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington and editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care, who co-wrote the publication’s editorial; former ADA president Desmond Schatz of the University of Florida, Gainesville; Aaron Kelly, a pediatric neurologist at the University of Minnesota; Justin Ryder of Northwestern University; and Irl Hirsch, also of the University of Washington. The five were also handing out editorials outside the room where NIH director Jay Bhattacharya was scheduled to speak. Bhattacharya resigned and another NIH official spoke in his place.

“They grabbed us, kicked us out of the convention center, and now they’re telling us we can’t go to the convention anymore,” Kelly said. he told MedPage Todaywhich first reported the story. “They’re taking our trash. It’s really come to America. The research is real. America needs to stand up. Scientists, stand up. Doctors, stand up.”

The ADA confirmed to MedPage Today that five registered scientists were removed from the meeting, saying the scientists violated the organization’s meeting rules. “Attendees were escorted out of the event by our security team because they displayed inappropriate behavior,” the ADA’s press team said. “They were respectfully given the opportunity to stop this behavior and they chose not to and that’s why they were fired.”

“All attendees must conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner, free from discrimination, harassment, or intimidation,” the order said. “Inappropriate behavior, including harassment; threatening or inappropriate language or speech; or disruptive or disruptive behavior such as protesting, will not be tolerated.”
