Tango’s roster gets a quarterback
In a dramatic development reshaping the characteristics of the Argentine national team’s defensive line, the technical staff led by Lionel Scaloni has issued an urgent call for defender Marcos Senesi to join Tango’s squad for the World Cup.
The decision to turn the table was made only 48 hours after the publication of the list without the name of the English “Bournemouth” defender,… A surprise that the Argentine media described as “unexpected”..
Argentina’s national team page confirmed that Senesi has left the Spanish island of Ibiza for Kansas City, Argentina’s camp headquarters, and is expected to join group training tomorrow, Thursday morning.
The footballer raised the spirits of his fans after posting an Argentina flag with the cup symbol on his official pages, saying: “I was called to participate in the World Championship.”
Senesi’s call-up comes to make up for a severe shortage in the back line, after the preliminary list saw the absence of veteran left-back Marcos Acuña, a River Plate player, through injury, in addition to Senesi himself initially being ruled out.
Which led to widespread questions about Scaloni’s defensive options before the coaching staff stepped back and brought the Bournemouth defender back into the game.
Siniche, 28, has been regarded as one of the most popular Argentine defenders in the English Premier League over the past two seasons, thanks to his strength in the tackle and his ability to build play from the back.
He previously represented the national team in 7 international matches, the last of which was last March, and the late call-up gives him a golden opportunity to participate in the first World Cup in his career.
The addition of Senesi is expected to be an important addition to the defending champion’s defense, especially given the injuries that have hit the backline before the start of the tournament.
Scalloni is betting on the player’s physical and mental fitness after he cut short his summer holiday in Ibiza to receive the call, in a display that confirms the players’ passion to wear the Albiceleste shirt in football’s biggest forum.
