Sarcasm or spontaneous behavior? Trump commented on the Ferran Torres hat controversy

The World Cup winner has raised questions during Spain’s celebrations

US President Donald Trump has waded into the row over the hat worn by Spain star Ferran Torres at the 2026 World Cup title celebrations, insisting he sees it as a “beautiful tribute” to the MAGA movement, refusing to call it a mockery of him.

Torres, who scored the goal in Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, appeared during celebrations in the capital Madrid wearing a hat that read “Make Spain Great Again,” a clear reference to Trump’s famous slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

The hat sparked a wave of controversy in Spain, where opinion was divided between those who saw it as a political message or support for the far-right, and those who saw it as a joke or a mockery of Trump’s stunning appearance at the World Cup ceremony.

Torres, who is currently on vacation, has not commented to explain his motivations for wearing the cap, which has opened the door to differing interpretations in both Spain and the United States.

Political division in Spain

The controversy turned into an arena for political debate, especially since Spain’s right-wing Vox party had previously used a similar slogan before the start of the World Cup, prompting right-wing figures to defend the Barcelona player amid criticism from parties and figures linked to the left.

Commenting on the criticism of Torres, MP Karina Mejias said. “Jealousy has always been the fuel of small-minded people. While some are busy criticizing, Ferran Torres is responding where it matters most… on the pitch.”

Trump: Everyone wants to join the movement

The issue escalated to the White House after the official White House account posted a comment on the X platform that read: “Everyone wants to be part of the movement,” a reference to MAGA’s slogan.

At a news conference in Washington, Trump was asked to comment on the controversy, and he said, according to the network RCC: French. “He is a great player. He wore a Make America Great Again hat. It was a great gesture and I think he did it in good faith. We appreciate it.”

With this statement, Trump decided his position on the incident, emphasizing that he does not see any insult or mockery in the behavior of the star of the Spanish national team, but considered it a positive expression of his most famous political slogan.
