About a year ago, I was in my parents’ living room, where the new TV sat in its box, waiting to be installed. My brother-in-law pointed to a woman in the package and said, “Yeah, that’s Dua Lipa!” I didn’t know who he was, so I didn’t think it was unusual for the singer to appear in the box. But one person thinks it’s even more difficult: Pay yourself.
On Friday, Lipa sued Samsung for using her image on some TV boxes, alleging that the use is illegal, trademark infringement, and a violation of her advertising rights. Complaint (PDF), filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, alleges that Lipa owns “all rights, title, and interest in the image titled ‘Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024.’
“Samsung mass-produced, distributed (or distributed) sold, and sold in medium-sized businesses in the United States many of its televisions in various forms in these boxes containing (the image),” the lawsuit says.
“Samsung’s infringing behavior – using Ms. Lipa’s wealth for zero consideration – denigrates her for her efforts in establishing a successful brand and prevents her from controlling and monetizing her assets,” the complaint reads.
The filing says Lipa learned about the boxes in late June 2025 “and immediately ordered Samsung to put them on and off.” However, Samsung was “suspicious and negligent, and the devices are still on the market today, still being sold in the US,” the filing says.
