Sam Curran wants a chance to replace Ben Stokes in the England Test team

England XI to face India in 2nd T20I: Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethel, Harry Brook (captain), Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue.

Curran is part of the England XI against India in the second T20I at Old Trafford on Saturday.

England made two changes from the XI that played in the abandoned series opener on Wednesday, with fellow pacers Shakib Mahmood and Luke Wood replaced by Jofra Archer and debutant Josh Tongue.

Test vice-captain Harry Brooke will once again lead the hosts. Ahead of the first T20 at Chester-le-Street, Brook said it would be an “honour” to be asked to succeed Stokes as Test captain.

So far in the tours of Ireland and England, India have held off handing over a debut to 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

And Morne Morkel, the world champions’ bowling coach, has suggested that the opener will once again be on the sidelines in Manchester.

“We had the number one batsman in T20 cricket, Abhishek Sharma, and Sanju Sansom was a World Cup player,” Morkel said.

“As a coaching staff, it’s only fair to show faith and support your players. Yes, a young man is knocking on the door and it’s exciting, but it’s a good sign that we show that we support the guys.”

Coles, meanwhile, has been called up to England’s T20 squad, joining the group for the three ODIs against India later this month.

Jack Crowley was part of the England squad for their last ODI series in Sri Lanka in January, but has now lost his place in the 50-over squad after being dropped from the Test side as an opener.

Jacob Bethel is expected to rise to partner Ben Dockett at the top of the order.
