Egypt’s national team put in an impressive performance against Iran at the 2026 World Cup, while the Pharaohs managed to qualify for the second round of the tournament for the first time in their history.
Egypt were held to a valuable 1-1 draw by Iran in the third round of Group 7 on Saturday morning to qualify in second place, five points behind Belgium on goal difference, with the Asian side three points ahead of their place in the top three.
Egypt captain Mohamed Salah started against Iran in his 30th appearance at a major tournament (World and African Cup of Nations), moving into second place on the list, overtaking Essam El-Hadary, who has made 29 appearances, including just one, according to World Cup statistics.
For his part, Trezeguet’s Mahmoud Hasan, with his participation in today’s match, equaled former star Ahmed Hasan at the top of the list with 32 appearances each, noting that all of Al-Saqr’s matches came in the Africa Cup of Nations.
If he takes part in the second round of the tournament against Australia next Friday, Trezeguet will be alone in the number and Salah could go one step closer if he does.
In turn, Mahmoud Saber scored Egypt’s fastest ever World Cup goal in the fifth minute, beating Imam Ashour’s 20th-minute goal against Belgium in the opening round of the current campaign, according to Opta statistics.
As for Pharaohs goalkeeper Mustafa Schubert, he contributed to a rare World Cup record after saving a penalty from Iran captain Mehdi Taremi in the first half.
According to the Status Foot Network, this is the third consecutive shot missed in the current draw of the tournament, which has not happened since the 2010 draw.
Before Taremi, Argentine star Lionel Messi also missed the current draw against Austria, and Norwegian Strand Larsson missed the match against France.
Schubert also equaled El-Hadary’s record as the only Egyptian goalkeeper to save a penalty at the World Cup.
