Russia has charged Telegram founder Pavel Durov with facilitating terrorism over allegations that the messenger app was used to recruit by Ukraine’s secret services.
FSB – Russia’s domestic security service Telegram was used in Russia to “organize and coordinate acts of sabotage and terrorism” and failed to remove channels, chats and bots used in Ukraine.
An international arrest warrant has been issued for Durov, a Russian national living abroad.
Shortly after the charges were announced, a Telegram account posted a picture of Durov holding up his middle finger to X. He previously accused Russian authorities of “inventing new reasons to restrict Russians’ Telegram communications.”
Telegram is popular in Russia and used by tens of millions of people, although authorities are restricting access as part of a broader crackdown on internet freedom.
Durov has lived outside of Russia for many years and holds French and United Arab Emirates passports.
It is unclear whether other countries or authorities may be subject to arrest warrants issued by Russia.
