Rosie Eccles is aiming to start her career with a third Commonwealth medal

Jones became the youngest British boxer to fight at the Olympics in 1976 when he competed in Montreal aged 17 years and four months.

He says Eccles’ mindset helped him negotiate his challenges, not least the recent “destroy.” Knee injury and subsequent surgery.

“We weren’t sure if she was going to box again, but Rosie is a person who will never lay down for anything that stands in her way,” he said.

“Nothing is too high, no run too long and no mountain too steep.

“He knows how to push and won gold at the last two European tournaments, which were big achievements.”

Eccles says he always wanted to do the right thing despite his handicap.

“I didn’t reach my full goal of Olympic gold and sometimes I have those days (asking) if I’ve underachieved in my career,” he said.

“But I think the most important thing is how I go about my career.

“I wanted to set an example for my nephews and nieces to always push back when things get tough and chase your dreams. That’s why I haven’t retired until now.

“I only want to go to LA (next Olympics) if I have a chance to win a medal.

“In terms of effort and dedication and graft, I know I couldn’t have done anything else.

“Someone asked me what else I’m worth. Knowing that I’ve finally given everything away.”
