Mocking the description of the “historical generation”.
Ricardo Quaresma has slammed Portugal coach Roberto Martinez after his country failed to beat Spain in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Spain beat Portugal without reply, with Mikel Merino scoring in the first minute of stoppage time.
Newspaper citations Record Quarezma’s comments on Live Mode, where the former Portugal international said the team left the World Cup without a standout performance and even added that the coach never impressed him.
He emphasized. “Everything went wrong for me from start to finish, everything went wrong. There wasn’t a match where we could say we played well or attacked a lot and we were unlucky.”
“Until today you were giving the game to Spain from start to finish. Spain controlled the entire match, did what they wanted and controlled the pace of the game. When he wanted to speed up the game, he did it, and when he wanted to slow the game down, he did it, and we were there with no desire, no pleasure, very slow.”
The former player of Porto, Chelsea and Barcelona added. “Then what are the substitutions that I don’t understand… I’m tired of saying this, but Martinez has never impressed me. Whether you like him or not, I don’t care if you’re sad or not, but we need more fun in this tournament.”
“I haven’t seen the national team perform so well since Martinez arrived. This is the truth. He tried fifty plans and none of them worked. The proof of that. we leave with the team that everyone described as the best of all time…but what are the best of all time? What did they win? We will go home disappointed and broken, or I better not say this tournament. I’ll regret it later.”

“There must be a coach who realizes that. No one should look down on a coach, but there should be that character and those manners. I hurt myself a lot because I did what I thought and what the game asked of me, and of course there were coaches who didn’t like that and replaced me. This is normal, these are their choices, they are responsible.
“Those players are moral enough to do what the game demands of them because no one will hold them accountable. No one will say anything if they fail, why don’t they take greater responsibility? What are they afraid of?
In the presence of Ruben Diaz, Quarrejma continued. “Renato Vega is playing a great game, what? In defense. Because when he wants to attack from the back, he creates complete chaos… The big problem here is that there is obviously a coach, but you have to take responsibility on the pitch and be a coach. Will you look at the coach and wait for him to say? “No, go to the right.”
“I can’t look at the coach and expect him to give me instructions, telling me where to go or not to go. There are things here that I don’t understand. Our midfield… great players, great talent, but they were very weak in this tournament. Very weak midfield. Weak offense, shaky defense…
