Skyroot named its first line of cars “Vikram” in honor of Indian scientist Vikram Sarabhai, who is known as the father of Indian programming. As a test of its technology, Skyroot worked to upgrade its rocket, Vikram-S, from 2020 to 2022 and launched a 6-meter rocket in November of that year. The much larger Vikram-1 rocket that is now about to be launched has three stages of propulsion, capable of depositing a half metric ton payload into low Earth orbit.
Russia finally got along well with Sarmat. Russia has announced a successful test of its latest Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which President Vladimir Putin now says will be put into service later this year. The War Zone says so. The device, which was designed to deliver several long-range nuclear warheads, has had a mixed record in testing so far and was originally scheduled to be launched in 2020.
All of this makes this week’s announcements very important, although they should not be confirmed on their own. The launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region took place on Tuesday, according to the Kremlin. About half an hour later, Russian officials said the missile hit the Kura test site on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East.
Chasing a ship... The RS-28 Sarmat, known by NATO with the codename SS-29 Satan II, is Russia’s next-generation heavy ICBM, intended to replace the Soviet-era R-36M2 system (SS-18 Satan). The Sarmat is a silo-based, water-launched, nuclear-armed ICBM. The missile is said to have more anti-armor power, but Russia has not made a good record with the vehicle.
The first successful launch of Sarmat took place in 2022, also from Plesetsk. However, it was followed by the start of a failed test in February 2023. Another test in September 2024 was unsuccessful, which led to the destruction of the test silo in Plesetsk.
