Republic of Ireland squad: Rory Finneran withdraws Jaden Umeh from Republic of Ireland squad

Newcastle United midfielder Rory Finneran has received his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad for their friendly against Grenada.

The 18-year-old has joined Heimir Hallgrimsson’s squad in Murcia, Spain for their training camp ahead of their clash with Granada at the Estadio Nueva Condomina on Saturday (17:00 BST).

Finneran joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in 2024 and has played for the Republic of Ireland at under-17 and under-19 level.

He was called into the squad following the withdrawal of Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Ipswich Town winger Casey McAteer, who are both sidelined with injury.

Benfica attacker Jaden Umeh, who received his first senior call-up, has been left out of his club squad.

As this friendly match falls outside FIFA’s international window, clubs are not obliged to release their players

Benfica Under-19s face a must-win match against Famalicao on Saturday and want Umeh, who scored twice in Sunday’s 6-2 win over UD Leiria, available for that game as they aim to qualify for the UEFA Youth League.

“Benfica are still fighting to stay in the UEFA Youth League at their U19s,” Hallgrimsson said.

“The plan was for them to secure it by now, but unfortunately, the results didn’t go their way this weekend, so Jaden still has one more game.

“We already knew it was a possibility, even if it was unlikely.

“It’s unfortunate for him that the outcome is the way it is, because we were looking forward to working with him, but we understand the club’s position and will have to wait for a future window to bring him into the environment.”
