Although Brian Mbemo held the ball in the build-up, Michael Salisbury’s goal from Mathieu Cunha kept United level.

Salisbury rejected a video assistant referee (VAR) review to rule out the goal and the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) later admitted it. It should have been banned.

Referees in the English professional game still follow a more civilized approach to handball than in other nations.

Although referee boss Howard Webb told Forest there was good reason to believe it wasn’t a handball by Mebemo, ‘football is expected’. The goal was to prevent it.

It was the 17th time in seven seasons – and the fourth this season – that a referee has overruled VAR’s advice on the petside referee.

Salisbury, who has been in charge of 13 Premier League games this season, is not part of the defending champions’ squad for Sunday’s 10-game run, which kicks off at 16:00 BST.
